In selecting emollients it is important to consider characteristics including chemical type, polarity or HLB, and spreadability depending on the desired attributes and application. For lighter products such as facial products, lighter, faster-spreading emollients are preferred. For more intensive products for hand and body or dry skin, slower spreading emollients with longer playtime may be more desirable. For optimal performance it is also desirable to combine several emollients with a range of characteristics. The emollients chosen and their ratios will vary with the application. This yields a product that is well-balanced in feel on application, rub out and dry down, and allows for maximum flexibility in modifying formulations based on any given need.
